Kant: Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View (Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy)From Brand: Cambridge University Press

Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View essentially reflects the last lectures Kant gave for his annual course in anthropology, which he taught from 1772 until his retirement in 1796. The lectures were published in 1798, with the largest first printing of any of Kant's works. Intended for a broad audience, they reveal not only Kant's unique contribution to the newly emerging discipline of anthropology, but also his desire to offer students a practical view of the world and of humanity's place in it. With its focus on what the human being 'as a free-acting being makes of himself or can and should make of himself,' the Anthropology also offers readers an application of some central elements of Kant's philosophy. This volume offers an annotated translation of the text by Robert B. Louden, together with an introduction by Manfred Kuehn that explores the context and themes of the lectures.

Scientific comparison is against Kant. However, he was a writer of the Enlightenment.
By Roberto Fideli
In my only one-day visit to Germany I saw Goethe's house in Frankfurt. But as a scholar of comparison and comparative method in the humanities who is in touch with the natural sciences, I am in disagreement with him (see my review in Amazon com). Before studying German any Italian who is not there for a paid job shall think about their culture and his (or her) Self. According to my taste, as a humanist I don't find anything really interesting coming now from German-speaking countries. Of course, I recognize their contribution to science. English is the international language both of the scientists and of the humanists.
The professor of philosophy Kant never travelled. He knew libraries very well; but his back became not straight. He never married. I don't know his taste. I hope that he was straight.
Hegel was a disciple of him. He asserted that everything which is legal is rational. So if you are an adult start smoking or don't stop, following this master. The materialist Marx was a disciple of him. Nietzsche used dialectics against him believing in a Super-human who however was very material in his aim: personal power. Did historical materialism and the "will-to-power" doctrine lead to the worst tragedies of the last century? Or rather did both these doctrines and the worst tragedies of the last century come from religion, and particularly from Christian-Jewish religion, as someone asserted? And what about this century? I let historians of law think about it.
Philosophy meant science until Newton's time. Now almost always it means falsified science, pseudo-science or anti-science. They didn't have and don't have any profession.
In this book translated by Cambridge university press Kant asserts that touch is a typically human sense (1798, book I, paragraph 17). But sometimes the great scientists of the far past were able to anticipate ideas of contemporary science: the zoologist Aristotle understood that the sense of touch distinguishes animals from vegetables (De anima, book III). In almost all vertebrates touch is the sensory system which firstly develops; then the acoustic one develops and finally the visual one.
Scientific comparison is against Kant. However, he was a writer of the Enlightenment, believing that you have to think with your mind without any master. But many important thinkers of the past contributed to the spirit of the universal declaration of human rights.
