Previous appointments include principal adviser to the Australian Federal Parliament's Joint Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee, official historian for the RAAF, contributing editor to Asia-Pacific Defence Reporter, military history commentator on ABC television, and RAAF pilot.

About the Author
Ian Hacking holds the chair of philosophy and history of scientific concepts at the College de France. Until recently he was a University Professor of philosophy at the University of Toronto. He is the author of many books, including Representing and Intervening, The Taming of Chance, Probability and Inductive Logic, and most recently Historical Ontology. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, the American Academy of Arts and Science, and the British Academy. In 2004 he was elected a Companion of the Order of Canada. He is also the winner of the Holberg International Memorial Prize 2009.

excellent historical account of probability theory at its infancy

This is the second edition of a book originally published in 1975. The main addition seems to be a large chapter-like section titled "Introduction 2006: The Archaeology of probable reasoning" that puts the work in contect with the thinking, research and publications from 1975-2006 that relate to the topic of the book.

The main premise of the book is that although probabilistic ideas may have been around before 1670 and the detailed mathematical theory of probability and statistics occurred in the 20th century, the original work of men such as Pascal, Liebniz, Laplace, De Moivre, Huygens, and Jacques Bernoulli from around 1670 to the early 1700s really mark the emergence of probability as a discipline and the development of mathematical results that spawned the development of various theories of probability that came about in the 20th Century.

This book is not a technical book and the specific mathematics that is covered is fairly easy for the layperson to understand. The key Idea is that in the work of Pascal and others dual concepts of probability emerged and the distinctions between the two concepts were not clearly delineated at the time. In a very historical account (much like the works of Porter and Stigler)that is also very philosophical in nature hacking points to the two concepts of probability. One is based solely on relative frequencies of occurrences based on empirical data. This led to the development in the 20th century of the work by Richard von Mises and A. N. Kolmogorov. The second concept is based on degrees of belief and led shortly to the work of Thomas Bayes and in the 20th century, Bruno De Finetti, Harold Jeffreys and L. J. Savage in what became known as the Bayesian or subjectivist school of probability and statistical inference.

Hacking refers to the frequentist approach as aleatory probability and the Bayesian approach as epistemic probability. Hacking sees more than two schools of probability, induction and statistical inference. It is Hacking's contention that the emergence of probability can be attributed precisely to the time about 1670 when the work of Pascal first came out. He sees this strong development as the result of the need for probability in several areas. The earliest was games of chance. But it was only because of issues in the law, theology, economics, physics, atronomy and other sciences that the need led to the field flourishing with the top minds of the 17th and 18th centuries addressing the philosphical and mathematical issues. Included were Newton, Liebniz, Pascal, De Moivre, Laplace, Huygens and Bernoulli.

As a professional statistician I found it interesting to learn how the works of the late 1600s and early 1700s influenced probability and statistics as it developed in the 20th century. Some of this work was familiar to me but much of it was not. For example, I found it interesting to learn that the "first" theorem in probability wsa Jacques Benoulli's proof of the weak law of large numbers. This was given as part of his work "Ars conjectandi", the art of conjecturing. Bernoulli died in 1705 and it wasn't until 1713 that his Nephew Nicholas Bernoulli was able to get it into print.

This book is very well researched and the author presents his case in a very articulate manner. I think anyone with an serious interest in probability would enjoy this book. It also contains an excellent bibliography that is 15 pages long. I have not read it but I expect that the authors other book "The Taming of Chance" would be equally informative and fascinating.

Another Very Interesting Hacking Book; 4.5 stars

Another very interesting book by Ian Hacking. This extended essay is an ambitious combination of general intellectual history, specific history of probability theory, and some reflections on the philosophical implications of these ideas and how they developed. Ideas of probability were essentially a new development in human thought, emerging only in the 17th century. Hacking begins with several chapters on the background changes that made the emergence of probability theory possible. Probabilistic thinking is made possible by the profound intellectual changes that form the foundation of the Scientific Revolution of the 17th century, including new ideas about evidence and causation. These ideas emerge from abandonment of the emphasis on Aristotlein deductive approaches to knowledge and acceptance of more empirical approaches emerging from the "low" sciences of medicine and alchemy. Against this background, several important figures like Pascal, Leibniz, and Bernoulli begin to develop more probability ideas. Hacking is very good on the immediate and philosophical concerns that drove these investigations. For Pascal, for instance, the development of his contribution to probability and decision theory was bound up in his Jansenist theological preoccupations. Hacking traces the development of these ideas, often with interesting reference to 20th century discussions of probabilistic thought with a minimum of technical language and a wide range of knowledge of this topic. He shows how a number of factors, for example, the need for Dutch provinces to develop profitable ways of selling annuities, contributed to the develop of probabilistic thinking. He concludes with a very interesting and surprising observation about one of the philosophical consequences of the emergence of probability, that it made it possible for Hume to pose the skeptical problem of induction. A really stimulating book.

What this book is NOT!

A blurb for this book reads: "Historical records show that there was no real concept of probability in Europe before the mid-seventeenth century." That is flatly false, as shown clearly by James Franklin in his _The Science of Conjecture_.

Hacking's book is really great, but it does start very late in the game, with an advanced notion of "probability." So it is NOT a study of the origin of the concept of probability. For something more like that, see Franklin's book. The books are a delight to read back-to-back, beginning with Franklin who gives such amazing details it truly amazing.

A nice and timely introduction to Bangladesh

I was for a long time on the lookout for a handy book on Bangladesh to give as gifts to my non-bengali friends; so that they appreciate the richness of the bengali culture. Now that this book is on the market I can safely update my friends on my country.
However, it is something magical with the author's erudition to summarize 2000-plus years of history into a 370 page book. He had passed without doubt. He started with the prehistory and ended with the 21st century - a feat that will not be overlooked by any careful reader. For the sake of conciseness, there may be several important omissions. But I shall argue for the author's side that given the breadth and depth of the history, also given the short time a modern reader has to his expense - this is the best trade-off that one can make without loosing conformity. An additional benefit are the pictures which are quite uncommon among the books on Bangladesh. It seems that they are carefully chosen from various parts of the real contemporary Bangladesh gives the reader a sense of the place, time and people.

Don't buy the Lonely Planet, you'll need this before visiting.

It's a good read for a history of such a young country. The author does a great job of untangling the complex social and governmental structures in which Bangladesh arose from. He goes on to give a little bit more about the present day culture though more detail in this area would have been helpful. The book is peppered with interesting injections that coincide with the topic and spice up the linear plot. I had to read it since I'm going to live there, but I enjoyed it very much.

A solid introduction

A very convincing case for further study of Bangladesh, this book is a spot-on summary of the various threads of current scholarship on this fascinating country. Solidly researched and impeccably argued, by only critique would be that the book is organized maybe too neatly and things seem more cut-and-dry than they really are. Nonetheless, a great building block-- a comprehensive introduction.

Excellent resource for advanced students

I have purchased dozens of Spanish grammar books over the past few years, and I can honestly say that this is one of the best. Because of the detailed explanation and numerous examples -- both common and rare, this book is not for the beginning student. However, because of its rich content and clearly explained grammar rules, supported by excellent examples, I would use this book as an invaluable and necessary resource for my AP Spanish class.

Paul Josephson is Professor of History at Colby College. A specialist in big science and technology in the twentieth century, he is the author of nine books on the history of science and technology and on human-nature interactions.

Aleh Cherp is Professor of Environmental Sciences and Policy at the Central European University in Budapest, Hungary, and Associate Professor at Lund University, Sweden.

Ruben Mnatsakanian is a Professor of Environmental Sciences and Policy at the Central European University and head of the Collaborating Centre of the Global Environmental Outlook Project launched by United Nations Environmental Programme.

Nicolai Dronin is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Geography at Moscow State University.

Dmitry Efremenko is Head of the Sociology Department at the Institute for Scientific Information on Social Sciences at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Vladislav Larin is a senior analyst, writer and researcher for the Russian Academy of Sciences' journal Energy: Economics, Technology, Ecology.

About the Author
David Fate Norton is Professor of Moral Philosophy Emeritus, McGill University, and Adjunct Professor of Philosophy, University of Victoria. He has published widely on Hume and eighteenth-century British philosophy, and recently co-edited the first critical edition of Hume's Treatise of Human Nature.

Jacqueline Taylor is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of San Francisco. She has published on Hume's philosophy in Hume Studies, Topoi, The Journal of Ethics, The Blackwell Guide to Hume's Treatise, and Feminist Interpretations of David Hume.

About the Author
Maury Klein (B.A. Knox College, M.A., Ph.D. Emory University) has been a professor of history at the University of Rhode Island since 1964, receiving a Doctor of Humanities degree and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Knox College in 2001. Klein has been a Newcomen Fellow at Harvard Business School and held a Mellon Fellowship at Hagley Museum and Library. He has published 13 books and his numerous articles have appeared in Forbes, City, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, American History Illustrated, Sports Illustrated, and Civil War Times Illustrated. Klein has also appeared on documentaries on the BBC and PBS, among other networks.

A well written and concise overview of the nature and impact of the rapid industrialization of the USA that occurred between the Civil War and WWI. In less than 200 pages, Klein covers the explosive growth of industry, the bases for rapid American industrial growth, and some of the consequences of the particular form industrialization took in the USA. Klein particularly emphasizes the development and growth of major American corporations. This partly an ironic enterprise in which the actions of creative entrepreneurs resulted in the development of major bureaucratic enterprises, as described brilliantly in Alfred Chandler's The Visible Hand. The major theme of the book is the development of the American economy from a predominantly rural, small market society to a much larger economy dominated by large oligopolistic firms and a more complex urban society. The corporatization of business provoked a large scale corporatization of American society. As underlying factors, Klein emphasizes the enormous natural resources of the USA, major technological innovations in power generation, transport, and communications, and the creation of a very favorable political and legal environment by the post-war Republican Party. Klein also deals well with the social consequences of industrialization and corporatization of American life. He discusses the negative impact of the emphasis on personal gain at the expense of social goals as a major theme. He also descibes the articulation of consumer society very well. The bibliography is quite good.

As an overview book, this is very good but does have some defects. As is typical for historians, Klein's descriptions of changes are entirely written. A few appropriate charts and tables would complement the text nicely. Klein's description of the important role of major post-war entrepreneurs is inappropriately fulsome. Readers interested in a useful corrective view should read Richard White's Railroaded, a recent and very good book about Western development. Klein appropriately emphasizes the role of technological innovation but doesn't give a good impression of the international dimension of technological innovation. Most of the fundamental innovations he discusses were invented in Europe, though often improved in the USA. He descibes American government as being devoted to providing maximum scope to individual economic initiative but I'm not sure that this does justice to the high degree of tariff protection provided by the Federal government or the importance of the relatively large investment made in public education. Describing the Supreme Court's use of the 13th and 14th Amendments to protect corporations as an effort to use traditional categories in dealing with novel phenomena seems strained. Finally, while Klein correctly points to the enormous economic expansion and enhancement of daily life made possible by American industrialization, he overlooks a major negative consequence. One of the entrepreneurs mentioned by Klein (and discussed at considerable length in Chandler's book)is James Duke, the originator of the modern tobacco industry. Reasonable estimates of the consequences of tobacco abuse indicate approximately 100 million premature deaths in the course of the 20th century and millions of premature deaths in each year of the 21th century. This makes Duke and his successors bigger killers than Hitler, Stalin, and Mao combined.
