An indispensable book for anyone studying or teaching Thomas Jefferson

I have written a biography of Thomas Jefferson, and thus I have a stake in this controversy, but I admire profoundly the achievement of Frank Shuffelton in assembling and editing this indispensable volume. Its authors comprise a galaxy of the best scholars writing on Jefferson and his time, and this book is a lucid, responsible introduction to the man, his thought, and his world. Indeed, it is precisely because these scholars do not have an axe to grind that this book is so dang good.

Let me say, because of the first review here, which takes a part for the whole, that the Jefferson-Hemings relationship and its historical significance form but one thread of the complex tapestry of Jefferson scholarship. This book surveys the whole tapestry and distills it with grace and skill. Its examinations of everything from Jefferson's foreign policy to his relationship with John Adams are enlightening and challenging in the best sense.

I am sorry that Dr. Herbert Barger's review was the first one to appear here. I hope that my review will give Amazon customers and prospective readers a better sense of what this book is like and how valuable it is.

Outstanding collection of essays by Jefferson scholars

This collection of fourteen essays on Thomas Jefferson was recommended to me by Dr. Joanne Freeman in a response to my e-mail asking for reference material on the friendship of Jefferson and John Adams. Little did I know that she had written an essay on this subject and that is was part of this collection. I found the collection to be valuable as I worked on my master’s thesis about the friendship of Jefferson and Adams. She should have advised me not to study Jefferson for a master’s thesis because he is one of the most maddeningly complex presidents we have ever had. The more I studied Jefferson and Adams the more I saw their relationship as one in which two men became intertwined with each other to the point where their differences finally pulled them apart only for their interests to put them back together.

John Adams is a fairly easy man to decipher compared to Thomas Jefferson. The contradictory nature of Jefferson makes pinpointing what he actually believed so incredibly difficult. I think that is where a collection of essays really stands out in isolating Jefferson on various issues and at various points in his life. Like any individual, Jefferson changed his views on some things during the course of his life. That is perfectly natural. However, as he emerged on the national stage of politics in the young republic, he changed those views when confronted by reality.

I came to the realization that Jefferson’s ethics were that the ends have to justify the means. In that regard I question whether he was contradictory after all. He had goals and I really think that to him, the goals or end results meant more than the means used to meet the ends. That explains a great deal of why he wrote one thing and then did another. As long as his goals were met, the means would be justified. In reading through these essays, that idea began to germinate in my mind.

As a grad student working on Jefferson, I was very happy to have the additional sources cited in each essay. Dr. Freeman’s were good pointers to the letters exchanged between the two men which made for some interesting reading. This book is a strong indicator of the complexity of Thomas Jefferson. Religion, slavery, architecture, republicanism, democracy, Native Americans, science, liberty, and education are all areas that Jefferson not only dabbled in, but influenced within the United States. Understanding why he held the views he did on each subject requires sorting through a lot of Jefferson’s writing.

Fortunately, so much of that prose was preserved for scholars. Yet, even with the voluminous correspondence he had, the man still remains a difficult subject to master. The weird part about Jefferson is that he himself has been changed over time to meet the needs of the people and nation for various purposes. Jefferson himself might object to the way he has been cast over the last two centuries, but that is partly his own doing with the way he wrote one thing and then took different actions. As a result of the differing Jeffersonian interpretations, it is a chore to wade through the facts and fiction in order to find the real Jefferson.

Going through these essays is a good way to start that process. These authors are serious scholars of Jefferson or the time he lived in. Years of experience backs the essays and gives them serious scholarly weight. As a result, the collection makes a very good starting point for students studying Jefferson. I give the collection four stars as I hold the fifth for select books that stand far above the field. This collection is separated from the pack and really is a four and a half star selection. On a ten point scale it would get a nine. In any event, it is a good collection of essays and a very good way to learn about Jefferson without reading several hundred pages.

A Distorted Book for Our Students

The author, a well known researcher and Jefferson commentator, is VERY remiss in aiming this book at our future students. Mr Shuffelton and the other contributors are remiss in suggesting that Thomas Jefferson fathered slave children in my estimation. A panel of 13 prominent scholars released the Scholars Commission Report which found NO proof of TJ fathering any slave child. So after reading this book one is inclined to believe that Thomas Jefferson not only fathered slave children but history must be changed.

If used in our educational systems it will "indoctroniate" our youngsters into believing false information. As Annette Gordon-Reed, one of the writers, has said in her latest book that Thomas Jefferson fathered 7 children.........an outrageous and preposterous unproven statement.

I highly recommend this book not be used in our educational systems.

An excellent introduction to a vast subject

Although my shelves are loaded with histories of the Broadway musical, there is always room for one more. So I really looked forward to reading "The Cambridge Companion to The Musical" (Cambridge University Press, 2002). When I saw there were only 265 pages of text (not counting bibliography and index), I doubted that they could adequately cover the field. Soon I began to realize that the "field" included American and British musicals, film musicals and film versions of stage musicals, and even recordings; and I just settled down to enjoy what amounts to a series of essays covering all these fields, none of them adequately but all of them interestingly.
There are fourteen chapters by various writers, organized into three parts. The first deals with "Adaptations and transformations before 1940" and includes essays on the early days of the American musical theatre in general, then in New York, operetta on both sides of the Atlantic, the Afro-American as depicted on stage, and the American musicals of the 1920s and 1930s. Part II covers the years from 1940 to 1970 and discusses the British theatre, Rodgers and Hammerstein, their successors, and Weill and Bernstein. Part III picks up the story with a disproportionately long chapter on Sondheim, the fully integrated musical, the film musical, rock, and the megamusical--which brings us into the present century with a lot of questions yet to be answered by way of projection.

About the Author
Douglas Arner is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Hong Kong, specializing in financial law, regulation, and development. He is Director of the Asian Institute of International Financial Law (AIIFL) and director of the LLM (Corporate and Financial Law) Programme at HKU. In addition, he is the Co-Director of the HKU-Duke University Asia-America Institute in Transnational Law. Prior to his appointment at HKU, Dr. Arner was the Sir John Lubbock Support Fund Fellow at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies (CCLS) at Queen Mary, University of London, and Director of Research of the London Institute of International Banking, Finance, and Development Law (a think-tank consultancy). Dr Arner has served as a consultant with, among others, the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, APEC, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and Development Bank of Southern Africa. He has lectured, co-organised conferences and seminars, and been involved with financial sector reform projects in over 20 economies in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. He is co-author or co-editor of five books, and author or co-author of more than forty studies, articles, and chapters on financial law, regulation and development. His current research focuses on financial development and regional financial integration. Dr Arner holds a BA in literature, economics, and political science from Drury University, a JD (cum laude) from Southern Methodist University, an LLM (with distinction) in banking and finance law from the University of London (Queen Mary College), and a PhD from the University of London.

Extraordinary tour of our imminent choices

Complete. Here and now. Solid. It takes the reader on a 360 degree loop, at least for the next 100 years. Professor Jaccard evidently knows how to deliver a class. Good economic analysis, just three things I wanted to mention:

1. The book needs a relative sense of the urgency for policy that fosters carbon capture -with its corresponding research of possible CO2 leaks- a starting point, if not the cornerstone of his proposal.
2. Idem 1 but for legislation that promotes the adaptation of new technologies (ingenuity) to replace the vanishing fossil fuels. These technologies are intrinsically linked to the success of the proposal as a whole.
3. I wasn't very convinced on the transportation front. If combustion from "Status Enhancement Vehicles" represents almost half of the total anthropogenic-related pollution, shouldn't we be focusing more on them? The current technologies are mentioned and explained, but transportation is key in our urban societies and needs a push from governments if a transition is to take place in the short run. Taxing private vehicle owners (Yes, like smokers!)could be a means to promote and build alternative clean transportation and at the same time curb driving.

I understand that the book cannot cover all the issues at hand. In 361 pages, it addresses and explains with surprising clarity our current situation and possible solutions. Worth every page.

Clean fossil fuel - an oxymoron?

Given all the talk of "peak oil" in the media, it appears that the public has accepted the message that we are running out of all manner of fossil fuels. Regardless, high pump prices aren't viewed as signs of increasing scarcity, but rather of increased collusion among big oil companies.

This book provides a very useful compendium of energy industry information, and argues convincingly that fossil fuels will not run out for quite some time. The information the book contains would go far to dispelling a lot of fossil fuel "urban myths" if energy consumers took the time to read it.

Other recently released books on energy and climate change encourage readers to "stick it" to big oil and big coal by going "off-grid", etc., and don't sufficiently explore how these same companies can play a role in a more sustainable energy future.

While fossil fuels may never be viewed as "clean" by the public, they will certainly endure for centuries as Jaccard attests. This book is a useful read for those interested in learning how to make fossil fuel-based economies more sustainable, using more facts and less media hyperbole.

Unsustainable sustainability

Jaccard's book is a good survey of many of the issues and problems surrounding energy use. But he pays lip service to some critically important issues.

Despite a few brief glimpses outside, Jaccard takes the usual economist's "closed system" approach and couples it with the usual technotopian idea that humans have the ingenuity to find technological fixes for virtually any problem. In talking about the future impact of human activity on the natural world, Jaccard comments that "any individual unavoidable hazards can be ones from which the system could recover within a reasonable time, either from natural processes alone or in concert with human remediation efforts" (p. 355)

A BBC News report that states that, due to human activity, "organisms are disappearing at something like 100 to 1,000 times the background levels' seen in the fossil record." ( [...] ) This loss of biodiversity has a direct impact on human health and wealth. To date, "natural processes" and "human remediation efforts" have not managed to bring back any extinct species.

Jaccard promotes the idea of "zero emission" fossil fuels at the point of use, but neglects the fact that large quantities of fossil fuels and resources are required by the operation of, and even production of, the machinery and infrastructure required to produce those fuels. He talks about the expansion of "clean" nuclear energy, but again neglects the emissions from mining, processing, and transporting fuel, storing and safeguarding spent fuel, and the construction of power plants and machinery. More importantly, Jaccard fails to mention the social irresponsibility of leaving behind toxic mine tailings and wastewater, spent fuel, and power plants that are decommissioned after their relatively short life span. Despite protocols and regulations, these will pose a hazard to future generations for thousands of years.

As a further example of "closed system" thinking, Jaccard talks about the expansion of "renewables," including solar and wind power, again without mentioning how dependent upon fossil fuels these energy sources are t present, for materials, production, and maintenance.

Finally, Jaccard neglects to mention that the growth he predicts depends heavily upon so many other resources, many of which are becoming increasingly scarce, and which rely on the current relatively cheap and abundant fossil fuels for extraction, processing, and production.

Despite the title of his book, Jaccard does briefly acknowledge that fossil fuel use, even in the manner he promotes, is not indefinitely sustainable, and would require enormous efforts and will to reduce GHG emissions, let alone solve all the other waste stream and resource issues. Indeed, almost appearing as repentance at the last minute, Jaccard's very last sentence acknowledges that a "sustainable fossil fuel future does not guarantee a sustainable human presence on this shrinking planet." (p. 361)

So much for sustainability.

Must have when on Neuro ICU rotation

I am a Neurology PGY3 interested in Neurocritical care. I have read other books on Neurocritical care such as the green book by Wijdicks, the pocket book by Bhardwaj, and the one by Ropper. If you want to buy only one book on neurocritical care, I strongly recommend buying this book. It is a very management-oriented book as compared to the one by Wijdicks. In my view this book is a must have and should be with you all the time while on Neuro ICU service.

good overview

Good overview. Lacks some of the details of larger books but great for the non-neurointensivist or for someone like myself who is about to begin fellowship in neurocritical care and would like an overview w/ review of fundamentals. Also liked the reasonable price, hardcover, chapter layout and wide variety of recognized authors.

About the Author
Thomas J. Schoenbaum received his JD in law from the University of Michigan and a PhD in Law from the University of Cambridge. He has practised and taught International Law since 1966 and is the author of numerous books and articles on legal matters. He has held academic appointments at the University of Cambridge and the University of Warwick in the UK, and from 1983 to 2003 he was Professor and Director of the Dean Rusk Center of the University of Georgia. He is now Research Professor at George Washington University Law School in Washington DC and Graduate Professor at International Christian University in Tokyo.

Inadequate

There are two issues with this book:
1. It is an introductory survey of existent international mechanisms, and one can find much of this information on the internet. There is no in-depth discussion of the use of these mechanisms. If you already work in the public international field or for an international organization, this book will probably be of no use to you.
2. The author appears to harbor a bias towards Islam and Muslims, and that when professing about international relations. He succumbs to the usual simplistic generalizations about the faith and its followers. Besides being bigoted, his statements are irrational: he lumps the diverse populace of the complex, Islamic world together as one, and attributes characteristics to them that pertain to all of humanity.
