All About Orwell and More

How interested in Orwell are you? If your interest is merely casual, this book is not for you. If, on the other hand, you consider Orwell the greatest politiacal essayist and satirist of the Twentieth Century, you should read it. Of course, the book should be read after you have read some of Orwell's books and essays and, perhaps a biography.

The Cambridge Companion to George Orwell contains essays by reputable Orwell experts and scholars. These essays discuss Orwell's novels and essays as well as his views on particular subjects. The focus is principally on his political writing and the evolution of his political views. While the writers of this book have different points of view, most agree that Orwell became a socialist in the 1930's and never ceased thereafter to be a socialist. Nevertheless, he was never a Marxist and he often criticized other socialists. It is clear that the view of Orwell, popularized in the United States, as a Socialist who repented is incorrect or, at least, oversimplified.

The book is a surprisingly good read considering the multiple authorship and nature of the series of which it is a part. If you have more than a passing interest in Orwell, this is a must read.

About the Author
Brad K. Blitz received his PhD from Stanford University and is currently Reader in Political Geography at Oxford Brookes University. He has written extensively on the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia and has taught causes in international and comparative politics, refugee and migration studies at Stanford University, the University of California Santa Cruz, Middlesex University, Roehampton University and Oxford Brookes University.

Useful Snapshot of Conflict in the Balkans

I was particularly pleased when this volume went to press as I direct a summer program on Conflict in the Balkans so naturally keep my eyes wide open for any texts that may be useful for my university students. This book certainly fits their needs and I intend to make it required reading.

20 chapters in just over 200 pages gives a good indication of the brevity of most. Yet this is appropriate for anyone (student or otherwise) looking for a snapshot of the region and its recent problems rather than detailed studies of specific issues. Contributors come from a variety of fields including academia, diplomacy, NGOs, journalism and law. Their nationalities are also quite diverse. End result? Good mix of perspectives that help the reader examine and dissect supposedly 'common knowledge' about the causes and consequences of conflict in the former Yugoslavia.

The last quarter of the book looks at the near neighbours and their practice and policies toward the former Yugoslavia, which I found useful.

Overall very good.

Kenez (history, Univ. of California, Santa Cruz) has distilled the voluminous literature on the Soviet Union's 75-year history to a succinct and factual summary. Throughout, Kenez emphasizes economics, creating an image of a hollow superpower that could neither feed its population nor produce a reasonable supply of consumer goods owing to its concentration on the defense industry. A secondary emphasis is on the cultural life of the era, discussing the films and literature of different periods. There is little on the 1917 revolution and only a short analysis of why the Soviet Union ultimately failed to thrive. Sources in the bibliography are primarily in English. Peter Kenez received his B.A. from Princeton University and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He is the author of many articles and books, including Cinema and Soviet Society, 1917-1953, and Varieties of Fear. He is currently Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

An excellent history of communism in the soviet union

This is a brief but complete history of Communism in the Soviet Union from the days of the October Revolution to its recent collapse. It's main focus is on politics and economics but other topics (including even cinema) are discussed. A little dry at times but always readable. Does not require any real background in history to enjoy. Higly recommended for anyone seaking an overview of this fascinating subject.

An excellent, short history

This compact and well-written book from Soviet historian Peter Kenez is an excellent short history of the Soviet Union.

Perhaps the most welcome aspect of Kenez's book is his willingess to acknowledge the centrality of ideological considerations in shaping both the views and policies of the USSR's Marxist leaders. While this is not surprising given the author's previous interest in the "propaganda state," it is a needed corrective to the excessive emphasis on "social factors" that tend to dominate other histories of the USSR.

Readers would have benefited from a more detailed bibliography or, better, a list of recommended readings from the author.

About the Author
Brian Forst joined the American University faculty after twenty years in nonprofit research, including positions as research director at the Institute for Law and Social Research and the Police Foundation. He is author most recently of After Terror (with Akbar Ahmed, 2005), Errors of Justice: Nature, Sources, and Remedies (Cambridge University Press, 2004), and The Privatization of Policing: Two Views (with Peter Manning, 1999). He is a member of the American University Senate and chairs the Department of Justice, Law, and Society's doctoral program. He is also a voting member of the Sentencing Commission for the District of Columbia.

About the Author
Andreas W. Daum is a Professor of Modern History at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has taught at the University of Munich, where he earned his doctorate, and has been a Research Fellow at the German Historical Institute, Washington, DC, and a John F. The numerous references to Emerick's book hurt this collection's credibility

About half of this book makes for some highly enjoyable, often insightful reading about the music we all know. The down side is that many stories, events and recording sessions that have already been narrated hundreds of times reappear here with puzzling frequency -- one can claim "Just in case there are new listeners" only so many times before the appearance of new Beatles books appears largely superfluous. But there's some great stuff here, if you're willing to be patient about the age-old anecdotes.

But we now have at hand an excellent example of why irresponsible history-skewing should be taken out of print before it bleeds into other texts and muddles the relevant knowledge base. Geoff Emerick's -Here, There and Everywhere- is cited often, especially in "The Beatles as Recording Artists" by Jerry Zolten (an essay that's also grammatically disastrous). Emerick's book is well known to be filled with errors, outright fabrications, and Emerick's taking credit for things that George Martin actually did.

Anything that Cambridge allows to be published as an academic "Companion" should, one would immediately assume, be combed over, fact-checked, and basically made to adhere to responsible literary practices. There are mistakes in other sections, as well; for instance, Howard Kramer, in "Rock and Roll Music," claims that the Beatles had to record twelve new songs for their first album, when in fact they only needed ten (the other four were the already-recorded A and B sides of their first two 45s).

Clearly, politics, rather than offers of fresh insight, figured strongly in which writers were chosen to write pieces for this collection.

For some reason, critics' opinions (credentials, please? It's like telling someone to immediately switch tastes in food...there's no right or wrong in music) are cited often, along with chart positions -- especially in Michael Frontani's mere list of facts in narrative form, "The Solo Years." Why? Talk about irrelevant -- especially in a book with more-intellectual-than-the-other-stuff pretensions.

If you've already got all of the other truly great books about the Beatles (Many Years from Now, the group's own Anthology, Recording the Beatles, the Complete Beatles Recording Sessions and, if you're into ultimately irrelevant but fascinating musical discussion, Tell Me Why), then this one won't do you any harm. It's often highly entertaining. But if you're looking for a place to begin reading about the Beatles, how they approached the studio, what they did to revolutionize the recording industry, etc., then I'd strongly recommend starting elsewhere; there are more consistent, more factually responsible volumes available, including those I've just listed.

(Incidentally, it's surprising that even the detail-oriented writings on the Beatles still haven't mentioned the speed discrepancies between first two American albums -- at least as they're heard on the Capitol boxed-set CDs -- and their much faster British equivalents. Many songs on Rubber Soul have this UK/US speed difference as well. Surely I'm not the only person to have noticed that the American transfer speeds were off?)

Fascinating look at the Beatles and their songs

I found this book to be an exceptional bit of musical history. It provided insights not only into the lives of the young Beatles but also into the influences that created and allowed the band to thrive and excel in their careers.

An excellent read and reference for any true Beatle fan.
