Jerry D. Moore is Professor of Anthropology at California State University, Dominguez Hills. He has conducted archaeological investigations in Peru, Baja California, California, and southern Mexico. He is the author of Architecture and Power in the Ancient Andes (Cambridge), Cultural Landscapes in the Prehispanic Andes (University Press of Florida), and Visions of Culture: An Introduction to Anthropological Theories and Theorists (Altamira Press/Rowman and Littlefield), and The Prehistory of Home (University of California Press.) He is the editor of Visions of Culture: An Annotated Reader and co-editor of The Prehistory of Baja California: Advances in the Archaeology of the Forgotten Peninsula (with Don Laylander).

About the Author
Robert O. Collins is Emeritus Professor of History in the University of California, Santa Barbara. His most recent books are The Nile (2002), and with Millard Burr, Revolutionary Sudan: Hasan al-Turabi and the Islamist State, 1989-2000 (2003), and Alms for Jihad: Charity and Terrorism in the Islamic World (2006).

James M. Burns is Associate Professor of History at Clemson University. He has written Flickering Shadows: Cinema and Identity in Colonial Zimbabwe (2002) and co-edited, with Robert O. Collins, Problems in African History (1996-2006).

A fine and very readable history of Africa

A HISTORY OF SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA.
NY: Cambridge University Press, 2013.

This is a fine recent history of Africa covering from about 3000 BCE to the present. This book is accurate, avoiding the few typos and other errors of Collins' earlier Africa, A Short History, although the latter is still useful because it is the only short one on this list. This new Collins is in general up-to-date, except the last chapter, which didn't change quite enough of the material since its first appearance in the 2007 first edition. But current affairs you can get from other sources. It is distinguished by its flowing readability, the sort of history you can take to your hammock and enjoy an afternoon of learning more about this continent. It does not have as many images, maps, section titles, and study questions as Kevin Shillington's History of Africa, still the very best textbook for courses in African History. Collins follows a long tradition of excellent single volume histories of the continent in English, an early one being the pioneering W. E. Burghardt DuBois, The World and Africa (1947). The study of African history picked up with A Short History of Africa by Roland Oliver and J.D. Fage (which I devoured on the ship bringing me to Congo in 1964). Robert W. July's A History of the African People was the best textbook for my American students of the 70s. Four authors among the leading minds in the field, Philip Curtin, Steven Feierman, Leonard Thompson, and Jan Vansina, produced the groundbreaking African History in 1978. And now we have this most readable and most recent history of Sub-Saharan Africa, a book you will want to buy to fill the gap in your knowledge of the continent.

About the Author

A very useful book for policy makers to understand what have been the primary causes of drops in crime, and informative for what hasn't been responsible. There is nothing worse than decisions being made on incorrect information when public safety is at risk, and this book helps avoid that trap.

Once again Professor Blumstein has presented a work which authoritatively surveys and defines a major area of criminology. Unless we understand what is behind the reduction in crime rates, and make use of that knowledge to focus our efforts to reduce what has been an unsustainable growth in prison populations, we will continue along the same path, with disastrous results for our economy and our society.

Alex Zakaras is Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Vermont. He is currently completing his first book on individuality and democratic citizenship in the writings of J. S. Mill and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Nazis and Good Neighbors is a meticulously researched account of U.S. involvement in Latin America during World War II. It lucidly explains the motivation of the United States in arranging and financing the imprisonment and deportation of thousands of Axis citizens who were legal residents in Central and South America.

Max Paul Friedman combines historical facts with an engaging style. The result is riveting reading. The impact this secret program had on Latin American governments and the people involved is clear. The parallel to U.S. policies toward "enemy aliens" today, is unmistakable.

Kenneth M. Roberts is Professor of Government at Cornell University. He is the author of Deepening Democracy?: The Modern Left and Social Movements in Chile and Peru (1998). Roberts is the co-editor of The Diffusion of Social Movements: Actors, Mechanisms, and Political Effects (Cambridge, 2010) and The Resurgence of the Latin American Left (2011). His articles have appeared in the American Political Science Review, World Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Comparative Politics, Latin American Politics and Society, and Studies in Comparative International Development.

About the Author
Lisa A. Keister is a professor of sociology and the Director of the Markets and Management Program at Duke University. She conducts research on wealth inequality, asset accumulation and the causes of each. She is the author of Getting Rich: America's New Rich and How They Got There (Cambridge University Press, 2005) and Wealth in America (Cambridge University Press, 2000). Her research on Chinese corporations and the country's economic transition appeared in her book Chinese Business Groups (2000) as well as various articles.

Darby E. Southgate is an assistant professor of sociology at Los Angeles Valley College and a research consultant. Her primary research interests are poverty, education and culture. Her research investigates the intersection of socioeconomic status, education and culture. She has authored numerous entries on culture, specifically on music and society. She also consults for agencies aiming to reduce homelessness and poverty through education.

About the Author
Ken F. Riley read Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and gained a PhD in theoretical and experimental nuclear physics, before following a research career in particle physics. He was also Senior Tutor at Clare College, Cambridge and a University Lecturer at the Cavendish Laboratory, where he taught physics and mathematics for over forty years. Amongst his other publications are the widely established mathematics textbook Mathematical Methods for Physics and Engineering, 3rd edition (2006) and the physics problems books Problems for Physics Students (1982) and 200 Puzzling Physics Problems (2001), all published by Cambridge University Press.

A Disappointment

For my advanced engineering mathematics text in college I had Sokolnikoff's and Redheffer's Mathematics of Physics and Modern Engineering--a compact and witty work. But I wanted to see what today's students are using for their advanced engineering mathematics text, so I combed through Amazon's catalog and selected the Riley/Hobson set. The Table of Contents looked comprehensive and the Solutions Manual would be an important plus. However, after reading through both the book and the manual, I have to say that I'm very disappointed. The writing is wordy, ponderous, and dry. The solved problems miss steps and, even worse, diagrams are missing. The chapters on differential equations and probability and statistics are decent, but the rest of the set is mediocre at best. The matrix exponential is just barely mentioned. Finite elements are not discussed at all. Numerical methods for integration don't even mention Romberg's method (which is what we use in industry). The chapters on Quantum Operators, Group Theory, and Representation Theory are inappropriate for most physics and engineering students; a chapter on crystallography would make more sense. I think that students (and graduates) would learn more by purhasing Schaum's Outlines and Bronshtein's Handbook of Mathematics. Or: keep using Sokolnikoff and Redheffer!
