About the Author
Rita Chin is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Michigan. She previously taught at Oberlin College, Ohio. She has received fellowships from the Social Science Research Council and the German Academic Exchange Service, as well as grants from the American Historical Association and the American Philosophical Society. She was recently awarded a fellowship from the Fulbright Program to participate in the German Fulbright Commission's seminar on Muslims in Germany and France.

Great detail and analysis about this fairly narrow topic

Was doing research about Germany's "unique" history of immigration several years ago and this was probably one of the most helpful books I found about the topic. If you're reading this review, I assume you're either a history buff or a student, and this will tell you everything you need to know about guest workers in postwar Germany. While the multiculturalism of many other European countries is largely due to postcolonial migration, much of the ethnic diversity in Germany is a result of the temporary ("guest") workers that came for opportunities during the rapid economic expansion that followed the war, then ultimately decided to stay in Germany instead of returning to their native countries. The author provides very strong analysis for how this all happened and how multiculturalism continues to impact Germany even decades later. Interesting read.

About the Author
Stephen L. Morgan is Associate Professor of Sociology and the current Director of the Center for the Study of Inequality at Cornell University. His previous publications include On the Edge of Commitment: Educational Attainment and Race in the United States (2005).

Christopher Winship is Diker-Tishman Professor of Sociology at Harvard University. For the past twelve years he has served as editor of Sociological Methods and Research. He has published widely in a variety of journals and edited volumes.

Excellent introduction to Causal Inference for social scientists

This book is an excellent and relatively non-technical review of causal inference in the social sciences. The authors condense a huge literature that spans economics, statistics, sociology, philosophy, medical statistics, and computer science into manageable pieces appropriate for scholars and graduate students in the social sciences.

The authors' primary contribution is linking the work on causal inference in diverse fields together, presenting a theoretically coherent view of causal inference that draws extensively on Judea Pearl's work in philosophy and machine learning (see his book Causality: Models, Reasoning and Inference). The authors successfully illuminate the equations underlying the work of Paul Rosenbaum, Donald Rubin, Charles Manski, James Heckman, Joshua Angrist, Guido Imbens, James Robins, and Paul Holland (along with many others) by connecting them to Pearl's fundamentally graphical view of causal thinking. The authors allow readers to grasp such a broad selection of research by presenting each element as a natural extension of an overarching theoretical perspective.

The book covers the strengths and weaknesses of many popular quasi-experimental approaches to causal inference, including conditioning (aka "controlling for other variables"), instrumental variables/natural experiments, case-to-case matching, propensity score matching, propensity score blocking, and propensity score weighting. It also presents a great overview of Charles Manski's work on minimal identification approaches (i.e., "let's see what the data can tell us if we invoke as few assumptions as possible"). Additionally, the book contains a chapter on causal inference and repeated observations/longitudinal data. The book leaves aside issues of variance estimation using these approaches, presumably because of its more technical nature and the large amount of research activity currently in progress.

This book is not a research "cookbook" in the sense that it will provide code snippets illustrating each technique (or any code snippets at all for that matter), so you will be disappointed if that's what you are after. Its value is in providing a theoretically united and up-to-date review of causal inference in the social sciences (so you will actually know what you're talking about as compared to simply pasting code into Stata/SAS/R/whatever).

This book should be on the shelf of any self-respecting quantitative social scientist, and it will provide serious intellectual fodder for anyone interested in causal inference more generally.

Great place to start learning about causal inference

I have many colleagues who say that they don't like this book because it's a mishmash of different analytical approaches and because it's treatment is incomplete. But I disagree with them: the book is a terrific introduction to the current literature on causal inference in observational studies. It provides the core intuitions needed to understand why randomization matters and how methods like matching, instrumental variables, differences in differences, regression discontinuity, etc try to overcome the problem of non-random treatment assignment. It also provides a soft introduction to analysis via potential outcomes and directed acyclic graphs. By being eclectic rather than purist in applying these analytical approaches, I think it better prepares the student for wading through the current literature, which is divided into camps who favor one or the other approach. It does not arm the student with enough knowledge to develop their own estimators or to handle questions of inference after you've achieved "identification", but then having it do so would be to ask too much of an introductory textbook. The bibliography is also great.

This textbook is the perfect thing for graduate students in the social sciences, public health, and education to read in their first semester of graduate school, along with starting on the more traditional methodological, statistical, or econometric texts. For any social scientist that currently feels "out of touch" with the causal inference literature, reading this book will bring you up to speed, at least in terms of intuitions, very quickly.

Very very clear...

Causal inference is not an easy topic for newcomers and even for those who have advanced education and deep experience in analytics or statistics. I have read many of causal inference books and this is, I would say, is the clearest one. It would repeatedly demonstrate the techniques with numerical examples unless you are completely convinced. Perhaps because it's written for social scientists, it is so clear (and sometimes feeling too clear) that I sometimes have to skip a lot. Apart from its hard-to-beat clarity, I would also praise the authors for bringing in Judea Pearl's causal diagrams along with Don Rubin's potential outcome approach (Rubin Causal Model) - two super ideas that have different ways to solving the same type of problems. About the Author
Emma Haddad is currently a Policy Advisor on the External Relations of Immigration and Asylum, DG Justice, Freedom and Security at the European Commission. She obtained her Ph.D. from the European Institute at the London School of Economics and Political Science, for which she was awarded the British International Studies Association prize for the best thesis in International Studies, 2004. Her research interests include the conceptualisation of the refugee figure in the modern international states system, the English School, and EU migration and asylum external policy, and her recent publications include contributions to Global Society, the International Journal of Human Rights and the Encyclopaedia of International Relations and Global Politics.

About the Author
R. A. Bailey has been Professor of Statistics at Queen Mary, University of London since 1994. She is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and a past president of the International Biometric Society, British Region. This book reflects her extensive experience teaching design of experiments and advising on its application. Her book Association Schemes was published by Cambridge University Press in 2004.

All the Newest Techniques Meticulously Applied

It is not hyperbole when the author says every working statistician who participates in experimental design needs this book. In fact, IMO, she's being too humble! I'd extend that statement to every juror purporting to opine in a journal, every teacher of advanced applied stats and experimental design, and yes, even the researchers themselves, before making crucial variable, constant, control, unit, treatment, block and factor decisions.

I once watched a sculptor create a statue. I was curious about the order in which she selected her tools. Knowing that this was an avocation, and that she also was an expert in robotics, I asked her about her selection criterion. She laughed at me (knowing I was in the same field) and said: "We scientists are always looking for the inductive abstraction, the process we can generalize. But in true art there is no SINGLE algorithmic order of tool selection you can assign to a factory floor. The emergent reality, in the moment, interacts with the artist, and the tool is selected based on much more exacting need. This is true whether you're a sculptor working in clay or a digital artist working in Maya."

That little digression aptly describes this text! In a perfectly ordered fashion, it manages to detail both the art and science of matching statistical tools to experimental design. The way Dr. Bailey does this, however, is amazingly applicable to algorithmic implementation! The razor's edge of real examples, problems with each design, work arounds and very unique ways to look at matrices (latin squares have no better treatment in any text, anywhere) balances both the art of tool selection and the generalization needed as a new kind of "design pattern" so we're not continually reinventing the wheel either.

This concept might already seem strange to mathematicians and programmers, but I know of one field where it is still VERY true: Organic Chemistry. The folks there still respect long experience and a "nose" for molecular arrangement that only comes after years of design, and still is as much art as science. If you've read the Black Swan, you know that we stats types often take way too much for granted, and Rosemary is well aware of the pitfalls of that frame in every chapter. Being honest with each other, we know that the "back end" of many studies are so carefully analyzed that we often gloss over both what was selected and why (opportunity costs) and the foundation design.

Background needed includes linear algebra, at least two undergrad years of stats including of course regression and ANOVA. A third year (undergrad) course in more advanced LA including the eigenspaces of symmetric matrices and orthogonal projections. The author doesn't say this, but I'd add a good grounding in polynomial operators if you want to extend what you're reading to algorithms and especially R.

Please note that although this is both a text and a reference, it gives detail in DESIGN, but not detailed R implementation. By design I mean drawing the diagrams, choosing the blocks and assigning the relationships. Execution of the stats can happen with any package you like-- this (in a sense) is about something both far more basic and far more important-- avoiding foundational mistakes BEFORE you crunch the numbers!

Highly recommended. Now-- for those of you that are autodidacts like me, without a big company or university to buy this for us: it is quite expensive now due to high demand and low supply. Cambridge is more academic, and I don't think they anticipated the uptake of this volume not only for training but for reference! They should have believed their own author. Solution: Instead of paying $200 US, check out both Amazon's third party sellers and their sister company at Abe Books. I got this for $30 US nearly new. You can do it, but you need a little patience. Either way, highly recommended!

EMAILER KINDLE ANSWER: I love my Kindle Fire, but NO, this is absolutely NOT recommended for Kindle (or any other E-reader). It is FILLED with diagrams, LaTex, MathML, formula tags, illustrations, etc. which are slaughtered by e-readers at this stage of the technology. Even MathType and other conversions can't help it because Rosemary's diagrams are key and intricate. Besides, for the $35 US or so for Kindle at this writing, you can get the paperback.
