Nice book, a range of trauma procedures, could be a bit more detailed but then I suppose it would be a much bigger book, good pictures and clearly written. Good for a new orthopaedic resident.

About the Author
Philip E. Auerswald, PhD (editor) is Director of the Center for Science and Technology Policy and an Assistant Professor at the School of Public Policy, George Mason University. Professor Auerswald's work focuses on linked processes of technological and organizational change in the contexts of policy, economics, and strategy. He is the founding co-editor of Innovations: Technology, Governance, Globalization, a quarterly journal from MIT Press about people using technology to address global challenges. He was previously a Research Fellow and Assistant Director of the Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. His published work has addressed entrepreneurial finance, organizational learning, industry dynamics, and innovation policy. He has been a consultant for the National Academies of Science, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Washington and a BA (political science) from Yale University.

Lewis M. Branscomb, PhD is Professor of Public Policy and Corporate Management, emeritus, at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government. He also holds faculty appointments at the University of California San Diego. Branscomb was the co-chairman of the project of the National Academies of Science and of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine, which authored the 2002 report Making the Nation Safer: Science and Technology for Countering Terrorism.

Todd M. La Porte, PhD is an associate professor at George Mason University. He was a member of the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management at the Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. He also served for six years as an analyst in the information technology and the international security programs at the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA), a research office of the U.S. Congress.

Erwann O. Michel-Kerjan, PhD is Managing Director of the Center for Risk Management and Decision Processes at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. His work focuses on financing extreme events, with a prime interest in the creation and implementation of private-public collaboration among top decision makers of organizations, or countries, in America and in Europe. He is a member of the Global Risk Network of the World Economic Forum.

Not a cheerfull title but great book.

This book is a collection of essays discussing security. The overall point is there needs to be a public/private partnership to protect our critical infrastructure. The best sections were written by Brian Lopez from Lawrence Livermore National Lab. Industry should take notice, self regulate or as soon as there is a major incident congress will step in and try to fix everything themselves.

David J. Samuels is the Benjamin E. Lippincott Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Minnesota. He is the author of Ambition, Federalism, and Legislative Politics in Brazil (Cambridge University Press, 2003) and the co-editor of Decentralization and Democracy in Latin America (2004). He has published articles in the American Political Science Review, the Journal of Politics, Comparative Politics, Comparative Political Studies, Legislative Studies Quarterly, and the British Journal of Political Science.

Matthew S. Shugart is Professor at the Department of Political Science and the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, University of California, San Diego. Among his books are Seats and Votes (with Rein Taagepera, 1989), Presidents and Assemblies (with John Carey, Cambridge University Press, 1992), Presidentialism and Democracy in Latin America (co-edited with Scott Mainwaring, Cambridge University Press, 1997), Executive Decree Authority (co-edited with John Carey, Cambridge University Press, 1998), and Mixed-Member Electoral Systems (co-edited with Martin Wattenberg, 2001). His articles have appeared in numerous journals, including the American Journal of Political Science, the American Political Science Review, the British Journal of Political Science, and Electoral Studies.

Brilliant theory

Much of the comparative parties literature argues that political parties in new democracies are inherently weaker. This book provides a reason why. Samuels & Shugart argue that presidential systems are inherently less likely to support strong parties because presidents are not loyal to the party system. Presidents can build a political base outside the legislature and cannot be disciplined by party leaders. The book doesn't ever develop an effective test for its theory, but even at the theory-building stage its worth a read.

About the Author
Kent Norman received his doctorate from the University of Iowa in experimental psychology and is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland. He is the director of the Laboratory for Automation Psychology and Decision Processes (LAPDP) and is a founding member of the Human/Computer Interaction Laboratory (HCIL) in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS). His research is on judgment and decision making and problem solving, particularly as they pertain to human-computer interaction and cognitive issues in interface design. Dr. Norman is the author of The Psychology of Menu Selection: Designing Cognitive Control at the Human/Computer Interface, and he is the developer of HyperCourseware(TM), a Web-based prototype for electronic educational environments reported on in his online text: Teaching in the Switched On Classroom (1999, http://lap.umd.edu/soc). He is co-author of the QUIS: The Questionnaire for User Interaction Satisfaction, licensed by the university to corporate and government usability labs, and he is currently doing research on 'computer rage'. Dr Norman is the author or co-author of more than 80 journal articles and book chapters.

About the Author
Joshua Tucker is an Assistant Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University, and will hold Princeton's Ralph O. Glendinning University Preceptorship from 2005-2008. His work has also appeared in a variety of academic journals, including the American Journal of Political Science, the Annual Review of Political Science, Electoral Studies, Political Analysis, Perspectives on Politics, and Post-Soviet Affairs. His research has been supported by grants from the National Academy of Sciences, the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research, and the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies. He was the recipient of Harvard University's 2001 Edward M. Chase Dissertation Prize and the Mid-West Political Science Association's 1999 Westview Press Award.

She was a woman of many names. She was born Mary Anne Evans but her pen name became George Eliot. She was born in the English Midlands in 1819, the same year Queen Victoria first saw the light of day. Mary Anne's father Robert was an estate manager; the family had a good income'; she was the daughter of Robert's second wife. Mary Anne became disenchanted with Anglicanism and Christianity. She became friends of the Brays in Coventry who were an unorthodox couple. As a child she was quite precocious and a scholar who learned to read Greek, Latin, Hebrew (in her later years) French and German. She scandalized polite society when she lived with George Henry Lewes. His wife was in an insane asylum. She always referred to herself as Mrs. Lewes. Lewes was a writer and intellectual who wrote on science and many other topics. It was he who encouraged her to write fiction. Her first book was "Scenes of Clerical Life": followed in rapid order by "Adam Bede". It was this second book that made her fortune and fame. As George Eliot she wrote such outstanding novels as "The Mill on the Floss"
"Felix Holt the Radical":;' "Romola"; Silas Marner" and her masterpiece of 1872 "Middlemarch." Her last novel was "Daniel Deronda" about a Jewish desire for a homeland and a society woman who is disillusioned with her life.
George Eliot was the most intellectual author among the great Victorian authors. She read voraciously in a number of fields, spoke several languages and traveled widely. Her prose was not easy reading but was treasured by discriminating readers.
She died in 1881. Though not as popular today as such authors as Jane Austen and Charles Dickens she is studied and admired in the academy and classroom.
Nancy Henry of the State University of New York, Binghamton is the author of this short text. Henry examines George Eliot through chapters on the author';s life; contexts of her greatest works; the social milieu in which Eliot wrote and the influence she has had on such authors as Virginia Woolf, Henry James, Marcel Proust and others. Virginia Woolf famously observed that ":Middlemarch is one of the few English novels written for adults.":
Lovers of Eliot's work and newcomers to this complex and fascinating author will derive benefit from this succinct but germane discussion of one of the English language's greatest novelist.
