It seems scholars are yet burdened with the onus of attempting to rehabilitate Schönberg's reputation--which is an absurd endeavour since now we have virtually his entire oeuvre in fine performances on compact disc.
In other words, the music speaks for itself and auditors may take it or leave it according to their own subjective tastes, there being no objective question of Schönberg's absolute cultural significance nor of the essential quality of his art works.

In English, the four finest books on Schönberg remain those by Malcolm MacDonald, Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt, Carl Dahlhaus, and Willi Reich; still, this new set of recently collected essays in the Cambridge Companion series is a worthy effort featuring historical criticisms along with deep musical analyses--though curiously apologetic in tone.

An enjoyable read for Schoenberg fans

The "Cambridge Companion to..." series, in spite of its name, does not cover all aspects of an artist's life and career. Instead, these volumes contain a series of papers by a range of scholars examining selected pieces or biographical periods. THE CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO SCHOENBERG, edited by Jennifer Shaw and Joseph Auner, holds 19 articles on the titan of 20th century modernism. Inevitably, not everything here will interest all readers. I'm just a fan, though with some knowledge of music theory. Papers like those by Richard Kurth (on "Pierrot lunaire") and Elizabeth L. Keathley (on "Erwartung") deal with more abstract critical theory. I don't care much for Schoenberg's first decade or so as a composer, so I skipped the material on his early years.

Ethan Haimo's "The Rise and Fall of Radical Athematicism" shows how from Op. 11 No. 3 to Op. 20 Schoenberg briefly flirted with abandoning motives and writing remarkably concise works. The paper charts Schoenberg's squabbles with his student Webern about who developed this perspective first. Joseph Auner's "Schonberg's row tables" discuss Schoenberg's methods of sketching twelve-tone works and contrast them with the more rigid formulations of later serialists like Babbit. "Schoenberg, the Viennese-Jewish experience and its aftermath" by Steven J. Cahn gives up an idea of Schoenberg's status as an outsider in Austria and his reasons for converting away from Judaism and back again.

Walter Bailey's "Listening to Schoenberg's Piano Concerto" chooses this mighty piece to demonstrate how, his reputation as an abstract brainiac apart, Schoenberg wanted the listener to hear with his heart as well as his head. Sabine Feist contributes "Schoenberg reception in America", a paper which overturns the myth that Schoenberg was neglected by charting the remarkable amount of performances he received in his new home. Richard Toop's "Schoenberg: dead or alive? His reception among the postwar European avant-garde" looks at what the Darmstadt generation though of Schoenberg, though I suspect most lovers of mid-century modernism will already know this trivia. Severine Neff's "Cadence after thirty-three years" charts the progress of the Second Chamber Symphony, Op. 38, a tonal work long abandoned by completed long after Schoenberg gained a reputation as an atonal composer.

Great as an introduction

If you are looking for a good book covering neuroethics, you've found the right book. Going into enough depth to properly explain each theory presented, while not becoming overly technical, this book is perfect to serve as a companion to any introductory neuroethics class while able to be read and enjoyed by the more serious minded lay people.
Each topic that is presented is explained in detail, and plenty of examples are given and elaborated on as the topic is developed to help illustrate areas that may otherwise be too difficult to fully comprehend. While providing sufficient details, there are also numerous references to outside studies or works.
The layout of the book is also quite good. Each separate section is preceded by a clear heading, helping to guide the casual reader to any particular topic of interest. Of course, this does not mean that each section is meant to stand alone -they may refer to an earlier theory or examples may carry over sections. However, I did feel as if the actual chapters were not as connected as they could be. This does not detract from the overall quality of the book, though, which earns it five out of five stars.

One can say with a strong degree of certainty that despite almost three thousand years of effort, philosophical speculation and rhetoric has failed to produce a coherent and practical systems of ethics: one that is applicable to everyday living and respects the powers and limitations of human beings. Religious dogma has also fallen short in ethical reasoning, in spite of its confidence to the contrary. Instead, religion seems to work against the nature and identity of humanity, and instead of preparing individuals for this life, has as its goal the preparation for life beyond the grave, in a fictitious heaven where oddly enough ethical standards will not be needed. However the monopoly on morality and ethics by philosophy and religion is coming to an end, and the death of god is not just a rhetorical Nietzschean pronouncement. This time it is real, but thankfully science has stepped in to fill in the gap, a prospect once thought to be impossible by ethicists and religionists, holding that the `naturalistic fallacy' and the "inherent determinism" of science are strong counterexamples to any kind of science of ethics or moral responsibility.

But in the past three decades, mostly due to advances in technology for studying the cognitive processes in the brain, neuroscience is pointing the way to a new outlook for ethics. Referred to as neuroethics, it has been discussed in various short treatises and research papers, and a few books, this one being one of them. Although written by a philosopher, its contents are well worth perusing. It is a significant addition to the ethical debate, and also a good introduction to the cognitive neuroscience of human motivations and actions.

Those weary of empty philosophical speculation in ethical considerations may decide not to read this book, given the author's academic affiliation. Such a decision would be a mistake, since the author makes it very clear that a philosophical approach to ethics must be constrained by what is known in experimental neuroscience. In addition, he expresses the hope that professional philosophers will consider the book seriously. No doubt many will, for it seems that many philosophers of late have not felt it a compromise to consider the integration of science with their own systems of thought. Hopefully this trend will increase in magnitude.

There are many interesting discussions in this book. One that is particularly fascinating concerns the possibility of mind reading sometime in the near future. The author points to "the degree of commonality" in the neural correlates of thought and to the possibility that highly complex or abstract thoughts may be less stable across time and be highly variable across subjects. This is a very important observation, since a natural question to ask is then whether thoughts can be "entangled" with each other to the extent that the diminution of one will result the diminution of another. Along these same lines, the author speaks of `brain modules' that are uniquely dedicated to various tasks. Since a unique module is responsible for carrying out these tasks, reverse engineering the processes that it deploys will be straightforward. But, the author argues, more complex and abstract thought patterns will not be the result of a specific module but instead will be handled by more domain-general brain patterns. Whereas domain-specific mental tasks are the result of evolutionary pressures, domain-general tasks are more the result of personal idiosyncrasies. They will thus be more difficult to manipulate or to "read" by an interested party.

Another very interesting discussion in the book concerns the neuroscience of free will. Free will has been considered to be axiomatic in any discussion of ethics or personal responsibility, but many in the neuroscience community have begun to doubt its existence. The author proposes an interesting counterexample to the experiment conducted by Benjamin Libet and Daniel Wegner that purports to show that free will is an illusion. In his counter to the Libet/Wegner claim, the author that consciousness does not play a role in decision-making, with the latter being out of human control. But this does not preclude free will, for conscious deliberation sharpens the quality of the decision-making, with the latter being governed by "subpersonal" mechanisms. But these mechanisms are constructed by beliefs, goals, and other personal biases, so it is proper to say that when "they decide, we decide."

I thoroughly enjoyed the book

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I was prepared to be dismayed, and i was disappointed. Levy writes cogently about neuroethics in a way that sheds light on some basic moral and ethical questions with regard to the practice and possibilities of neuroscience. He does a nice job of articulating how direct manipulation of the brain is not, in and of itself, any more or less ethical than indirect manipulation; he articulates the parallel reasoning and moral/ethical quality of both. It is an accessible book worthy of being taken seriously. It is, however, only an introduction - a beginning of a conversation. It brackets out many difficult questions and left this reader wondering if it really addresses ethical and moral matters of the age in any truly transformative way. Recognizing that it is not a book intended to produce some comprehensive ethical schema, Levy should not be faulted for this, and yet it was deficient enough in this regard that i found myself less than satisfied. Levy probably deserves a higher rating than i am allowing, but i was disappointed.

A good starter book for medical students

If the realm of the OR is completely foreign to you, this book is a good jumping-off point before you start your surgical rotation. It covers all of the basics and gives some info on assisting in different surgical specialties. The only drawback is that it's an "English" medicine text, not a "U.S." medicine text, so some of the terminology is not the same as is used in the U.S., e.g. "scout nurse" vs. "circulating nurse." It may seem a bit simplistic for those who have some OR experience, but if you don't this will acclimate you to a decent level of comfort before that first day.

Should have read closer before ordering

The book is thorough on the topic, and helpful. However, I wish I had realized the authors were either English or Australian, discussing British style operating theatres before I purchased the book. Most of the topics can be applied to American OR's, however. I should have guessed that Cambridge Publishing would not be using American authors.

About the Author
Gary Koop is Professor of Economics at the University of Strathclyde. He has published numerous articles in Bayesian econometrics and statistics in journals such as Journal of Econometrics, Journal of the American Statistical Association and the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics. He is an associate editor for several journals, including the Journal of Econometrics and the Journal of Applied Econometrics. He is the author of the books Bayesian Econometrics, Analysis of Economic Data and Analysis of Financial Data.

Dale J. Poirier is Professor of Economics at the University of California, Irvine. He is a Fellow of the Econometric Society, the American Statistical Association, and the Journal of Econometrics. He has been on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Econometrics, Econometric Theory, and was the founding editor of Econometric Reviews. His professional activities have been numerous, and he has held elected positions in the American Statistical Association and the International Society for Bayesian Analysis. Previous books include Intermediate Statistics and Econometrics: A Comparative Approach and The Econometrics of Structural Change.

Justin L. Tobias is Associate Professor of Economics, Iowa State University, and has also served as an Assistant/Associate Professor of Economics at the University of California, Irvine. Professor Tobias has authored numerous articles in leading journals, including the International Economic Review, the Journal of Applied Econometrics, the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, the Journal of Econometrics, and the Review of Economics and Statistics.

Since 2000, there have been a number of introductory books on Sylvia Plath. These come in two categories: biographies and critical overviews. The audience in each instance has been junior high (early teens) through high school and possibly early college. I've read each - including my own contribution to this genre - but most are written by a group of people whom I might term "serial" writers. Seemingly non-experts hired to write on Plath, or some other subject or person.

The Cambridge Introduction to Sylvia Plath (Cambridge University Press, 2008) by Jo Gill, Lecturer in Twentieth-Century Literature at the University of Exeter, is one of the most recent of these. In it, Gill discusses Plath's life and works in succinct chapters that are so packed with value it makes even the thickest Plath criticism redundant. You may know Gill's name in association with Plath's from the 2006 Cambridge Companion to Sylvia Plath, a wonderful volume which she edited and contributed an essay. The set-up of her Cambridge Introduction is similar, but this time the content all her own.

Gill's preface is clear: "to offer new readers an accessible, authoritative and comprehensive guide to Plath's writing...and to provide an incisive and insightful overview of key tendencies and developments in Plath criticism." (ix) This agenda is met immediately and consistently throughout the text. In each chapter, Gill breaks out major themes that she sees going on in the discussed text. These themes all present readers with questions, answers, and ideas for further study and inquiry. The books conciseness is valuable for new readers to Plath in that it sheds right off many of the layers to Plath scholarship. Although Plath has been dissected and examined, Gill encourages that us to re-examined previously held notions.

The first two chapters, as well as the last one, look at Plath's life and the contexts in which she has been read, interpreted, adopted, and discussed for more than four decades. Scholars are re-evaluating Sylvia Plath and reading her in new ways. Psychoanalysis, feminist, confessional and other readings of Sylvia Plath are a thing of the past. It is quite possible that some of those early ways of reading Plath did more harm than good. Currently, Plath is being read with an intense, dedicated focus to sociological and historical approaches. By connecting Plath's life and writing to events and other happenings at the time in which she lived, a new perspective on her accomplishments is possible. This offers, possibly, the most authentic approach to Sylvia Plath and allows for the continued re-appraisal of her works.

In Chapters 3 and 4, Gill turns her attention to the poetry. Generally her interpretations and connections of the writing and between the writing styles is accurate and authentically her own. While presenting her own analysis, she highlights the best of what's been said before her, as well as respectfully and successfully disagreeing with previous scholarship as well. Gill discusses out the controversy over Plath's Collected Poems, and the questionable chronology assigned the poems. While admitting some advantage to reading the poems chronologically, it "does not fully accomodate teh complexity of the work." (30). Her aim, therefore, is "to look at poems in detail in relation both to the collections in which they were first published, and the wider picture of Plath's ouevre." (30) This she does brilliantly. What I find particularly welcome is the amount of attention given to Plath's early poetry and juvenilia (Chapter 3). This is not surprising, given that Gill wrote on The Colossus and Crossing the Water in the Cambridge Companion to Sylvia Plath, the book she edited in 2006. The chapter looking at Ariel and the later poems is another fresh look at works well-criticized. In Ariel she highlights Plath's use of echoes, both the word and the sound, as well as her use of repeating words. Throughout the book, Gill refers to Plath's use of doubling or the double and thus shows a wonderful cohesiveness in all of Plath's writing.

Critical attention has shifted away from Plath's fiction for a while, the focus being on her poetry - as though Plath's identity as a poet and association with poetry makes her, in some obscene academic way, a more serious writer. The fictional writing is perhaps closer to Plath biographically, and this might be the reason for its shunning. A number of scholars are beginning to re-examine Plath's fiction, however, and Chapter 5, which looks The Bell Jar and Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams, is a wonderful beginning. Gill brings some of the themes discussed in the poetry into full spotlight in the discussion of the fiction, and shows that there is continuity and connectivity between the two genres in Plath's creative works. In the discussion of The Bell Jar, we are given a separate section on Plath's narrative voice, the double, and subjectivity. The worth of the stories assembled in Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams is given some major, much needed attention. These highly under-valued works will shortly be given more attention in Luke Ferretter's forthcoming critical study of Plath's fiction.

Gill examines Letters Home and The Journals thoughtfully. Both of these works are somewhat contentious: they were not specifically written for publication. I think Gill's history and reading of Letters Home will go far in reassessing their worth (while at the same time highlighting a need for a larger, more complete edition of Plath's letters). The Journals have received more critical attention, especially since the publication of the Unabridged Journals, edited by Karen V. Kukil, in 2000. Gill's looks at the Letters and the Journals in a wonderful way, "If Letters Home represents an attempt to persuade the mother of the stability of Plath's position and of the validity of the decisions she has made, then the Journals arguably represent an attemp to persuade and reassure the self." (108) Gill links these two works in ways that future researchers will find useful.

The Notes and Further Reading that conclude the book are also useful; particularly the Further Reading as the works selected are followed by brief annotations. The summaries are an invaluable way to indicate to readers what certain articles or books are about in a way that the title of the thing might not necessarily convey.

As I read each chapter, I continually said to myself, "Yes, yes". People shied away from sitting next to me on the train and my wife wanted to call the doctor. There is no reason why young readers, new to Sylvia Plath and impressionable, shouldn't be given the absolute best. I feel that with The Cambridge Introduction to Sylvia Plath, readers finally have. Gill's reading of Sylvia Plath is wonderful, intelligent, and informative. Although written with a for those who are new to Sylvia Plath, this is a must read for even the most seasoned scholar. Beginning your own introduction to Sylvia Plath with Jo Gill's book, will leave the neophyte at an advantage. Although the back story to Plath scholarship is always interesting, starting your interest here is more than a little encouraging. It shows that Plath's reception is changing, and that this change is for the better. There is very little to complain about in The Cambridge Introduction to Sylvia Plath. In fact, my only criticism is that the book was not longer.

I found this book quite helpful because it does justice to so many aspects of Plath, the woman and the writer, in very succinct fashion. You can read it straight through, but also use it as a reference work
