John Gerring (Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley, 1993) is Professor of Political Science at Boston University, where he teaches courses on methodology and comparative politics. His books include Party Ideologies in America, 1828-1996 (Cambridge University Press, 1998), Social Science Methodology: A Criterial Framework (Cambridge University Press, 2001), A Centripetal Theory of Democratic Governance (Cambridge University Press, 2008), Concepts and Method: Giovanni Sartori and His Legacy (2009), Social Science Methodology: Tasks, Strategies, and Criteria (Cambridge University Press, 2011), Global Justice: A Prioritarian Manifesto (in process), and Democracy and Development: A Historical Perspective (in process). He served as a fellow of the School of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton, NJ), as a member of The National Academy of Sciences' Committee on the Evaluation of USAID Programs to Support the Development of Democracy, as President of the American Political Science Association's Organized Section on Qualitative and Multi-Method Research, and is the current recipient of a grant from the National Science Foundation to collect historical data related to colonialism and long-term development.

Excellent for understanding and learning case study research

As a doctoral student from a quantitative background, I needed a resource to be able to understand the options for conducting case study research. This text provides a very solid overview with a good technical level for both advanced and intermediate researchers. Overall, I rate this quite good, it helped me get very quick acceptance on my research proposal for case study work. Having it electronically where I can access it on any computer (or a reader) makes it that much better than having to lug around one more text book. My back thanks you.

Good book on case study as a strategy/method research

This book gives you adequate technical knowledge on the concepts and application of case studies for researchers of different fields, but compared with the book called "Case Study Research: Design and Methods by Robert K. Yin, the Gerring's book is not rich in graphs, exhibits, tables and figures, so it is something boring to read it, contrasting the Yin's book which involves many helpful didactic presentations that makes easier and less boring to read it. In addition, the Yin's book is more referenced or cited in specialized journals and books on research design methods.

This book is equally as easy to read and digest as its counterpart "Surgical Critical Care Vivas" and forms a very useful physiology guide which is very easy to wiz through as a reference once used for exams (notably useful for MRCS) with an astounding wealth of information. Congratulations to Kanani et al. on these two ansolutely fantastic books

Heffner's memoirs reveal the conflicted behind-the-scenes history of the American movie rating system from the perspective of a man once called "the least-known most powerful person in Hollywood". Stephen Vaughn has taught the history of communication at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, since 1981. His previous books include Ronald Reagan in Hollywood: Movies and Politics (1994), The Vital Past: Writings on the Uses of History (1985), and Holding Fast the Inner Lines: Democracy, Nationalism and the Committee on Public Information (1980). Stephen Vaughn has taught the history of communication at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, since 1981. Jeff Gill is an associate professor of Political Science at the University of California, Davis. Surprisingly better than other options

Jeff's use of political science examples with the range of mathematical constructs makes this a particularly good book for beginning graduate political science students and undergraduate political science students who want to prepare themselves for graduate study. If you are new to political science and looking for a math refresher, at least scan through the book in the library before you adopt something else. My only regret is that the answers to sample problems are only available through a teaching edition.

Almost perfect, but not sufficient

Jeff Gill's book is intended as a first entry point into the formalities of current political science. In other words, if you are contemplating becoming a formal modeler (essentially, game-theory-based) or a statistics-based tester of political-scientific hypotheses, AND you fill comfortable with algebra 1 and 2 and some basic notions of calculus, then this should be your atarting point.

Given the goal it sets for itself, this is a very good product -- though not yet a perfect one.

ON THE POSITIVE SIDE:

1) Gill writes in an engaging and elegant manner (despite the surprisingly many typos throughout the text, which one hopes concern the prose only). This is a considerable advantage, because many of his competitors use a dry and boring style;

2) He uses many examples, most of which are indeed from politics, as the author and editor are proud to advertise;

3) He goes quite some way into explaining the intuition (i.e. the fundamental logic) behind applying certain mathematical tools to specific political "word problems";

4) Taken together, the book does allow the reader to gain the necessary background to start reading the American Political Science Review meaningfully (rather than reading the abstract and main text and trying to forget about the technicalities);

5) The exercises are generally as well-chosen as the examples.

ON THE NEGATIVE SIDE:

1') Elegance of style comes at the price of relatively poorly structured sections within each chapter (i.e. althought the sequence of the chapters themselves is very pedagogical, the sequence of sections within each chapter is sometimes less so, with repetitions, assumptions that the reader already knows X when X is explained 30 pages down the text, etc).

3') Focusing on the link between political word problems and available math tools, the author sometimes cuts short on the logic of the math tools themselves. For example, permutations, combinations, counting rules, etc, are realtively poorly explained. Some other well-known textbooks on maths for social scientists (e.g. Budnick, or Chiang) spend more time really explaining the math.

4') Although great care is taken to make the successful reader of this book a good political scientist, less attention is given to how to make a reader successful! ((( I think Gill automatically assumes that all buyers of his book will be people working with a highly specialised instructors, rather than people working on their own. )))

5') Although there is no doubt that the exercises are spot on, there is no appendix with the solution (or at least the answer). The Preface talks of some instructor's manual, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere...

ON BALANCE, A NECESSARY BUT NOT SUFFICIENT PRODUCT. This is very good, but it has to be worked through either with an instructor or with some other applied maths textbook.

Fantastic Starter Edition for Mathematics

This book is the best book of many that I have found for someone who is attempting to decipher the mathematical side of the social sciences. I say this particularly because the author provides useful mathematical tips and insights to variables and terms to those who are not familiar with all of their differing uses in the seperate branches of the social sciences.

Another reviewer said it best when he/she said that this book was written to help readers understand mathematics as a language. This author truly treats the understanding of mathematics as a language teacher does. The author does not fall into the usual trap that so many authors before him have done, which is to assume prior mathematical knowledge beyond algebra. This book makes mathematics far more accessible than its counterparts before it for someone seeking either a refresher course or perhaps to merely buttress their mathematical understanding.

Thorough and enjoyable

I am writing my doctoral dissertation on lexical meaning and bought this book to make sure there weren't any glaring holes in my knowledge. This book was well-researched, well-organized, and funny to boot. (I literally laughed out loud at the brief section on Fodorian atomism.) Lexical meaning is under-represented in the literature, especially in linguistics but also in psychology. Books on linguistic meaning generally focus on the phrasal level, and books on psychological meaning generally focus on the conceptual level, so this book was a breath of fresh air. The book is relatively short, but I'd say that all of the major players are covered, and Murphy ends each chapter with a list of suggested further reading. Because this is a linguistics book, not a psychology book, Murphy doesn't devote a lot of space to psychological models of lexical meaning or empirical methods for investigating lexical meaning, but there is no shortage of other excellent books on these subjects, whereas it is difficult to find an accessible survey of lexical meaning from a linguistics perspective. I absolutely recommend this book to linguists and psychologists who are interested in gaining a solid foundation to lexical meaning and having a few laughs along the way.

This is a great book reflecting all modern linguistic schools and their approach to lexical meaning. All the main points seem to be covered. The scope of the treatment and sometimes also evaluation seem to be rather subjective, but this can hardly be avoided.
The book also includes tasks for the students, which makes the book even more valuable. Undergraduates or linguists minor might find some sections and some tasks a bit difficult, but this could be easily solved by the instructor who uses the book for his/her course.
The delivery of most ideas and the language of explication of the most complex issues seem to be lucid and unambiguous. The author must be an experienced and resourceful university professor.
I would definitely recommend the book to my colleagues teaching lexical semantics.
