Highly disappointing

I wonder what is wrong with intellectuals concerned with Latin American literature. Its academic output lacks focus and depth, verging basically on anecdote and folklore. This book is a case in point, and nothing less than a Cambridge Companion ! The two essays concerning Cien Años de Soledad and El Otoño del Patriarca are good examples of wasted analytic opportunities. The wealth of creativity and innovation contained in these two novels is immense, yet their analysis is shallow and insufficient. How is it possible that countless essays in Gallimard's Folio fare much better than these ? Are french literary critics better qualified than most ? Perhaps. The truth remains that, to my knowledge, there is no better work to turn for now. Let's hope that the genius of Garcia Marquez receives its due somewhere and sometime in the future.
