PARTLY VERY INTERESTING

This is a collection of essays, some of which are fascinating, especially chapters 9 "Machiavelli and Rome: the republic as ideal and as history," 11 "Rhetoric and ethics in Machiavelli," and 12 "Machiavelli and poetry." But many are rather mundane. Furthermore, as should be made clear in the introduction, to benefit from the better essay, quite some familiarity with the oeuvres of Machiavelli is required.
Still, the book emphasizes some basic ideas of Machiavelli, from which I will mention a few that deal with core characteristics of politicians that are rather stable over history and are therefore relevant to contemporary and foreseeable political realities and their improvement: (1) Tension between the seeking of personal power and dedication to suprapersonal mission (though Machiavelli was unaware of dissonance-reducing processes in the minds of leaders); (2) the nature of much of politics as "theatre" and image manipulation; (3) the paradigm of interaction between "virtû," "occasione" and "fortuna"; (4) the very need to discuss realistically required qualities of politicians, as epitomized in the term virtû," (though the list of qualities postulated by Machiavelli is problematic, e.g., pp. 83 and 225); and (5) the great difficulties of humans to change their thinking and acting so at to adjust them to new situations and problems, which is a major source of failures, often misunderstood as "bad luck (e.g., pp. 152, 158, 228).
Not less important a lesson can be drawn from the life history of Machiavelli. It clearly demonstrates the value of personal experience in the corridors of power, together with an "academic" mind, for understanding the realities of politics. The weaknesses of many of the contemporary writings on political leadership, political judgments, and so on clearly stem from lack of either of them and sometimes both.
At the end of the last chapter the question is posed ""What is still living in the philosophy of Machiavelli" (p. 272, with philosophy having a broad meaning). It is a pity that the book does not have at least one chapter taking up seriously this question, instead of only dealing with the debate if Machiavelli supported republics, what was his real attitude to religions and so on. These are interesting for the history of political thought, but ignore the need to search for understandings relevant to essential radical improvements of politicians - of which there are plenty in the writings of Machiavelli, such as suggested above, including the very initiative of writing a realistic improvement-oriented "Mirror for Rulers," as needed today more than ever.
