His book takes the student reader on a journey from Africa through Europe, North and South America, the Caribbean, and back to Africa, as he explores the challenges posed to our understanding of knowledge and freedom today, and the response to them which can be found within Africana philosophy.

Not an introdution to philosophy or Africana

Just a word to potential readers: if you intend on reading this book you should have a firm base of understanding in philosophical thought, concepts and philosophers. Additionally you should be well read in a core group of African American/Africana authors. Having command of one and not both makes for a challenging read(this is close to how I would describe myself, although one may argue full understanding of one implies some understanding of the other(which is what I was trying to gain)). Never-the-less I was able to gain some insight into the previous readings I had done and I appreciated the authors bringing to light the inherent racism of historical and indeed current philosophy. I think if I had been aware I would have waited to purchase this book until I had taken a few more philosophy courses and had a broader understanding under my belt, none of which i say to imply this is a bad book, in fact I'm probably a poor judge, which is exactly my point -this isn't an "Introduction".
