About the Author
Rita Chin is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Michigan. She previously taught at Oberlin College, Ohio. She has received fellowships from the Social Science Research Council and the German Academic Exchange Service, as well as grants from the American Historical Association and the American Philosophical Society. She was recently awarded a fellowship from the Fulbright Program to participate in the German Fulbright Commission's seminar on Muslims in Germany and France.

Great detail and analysis about this fairly narrow topic

Was doing research about Germany's "unique" history of immigration several years ago and this was probably one of the most helpful books I found about the topic. If you're reading this review, I assume you're either a history buff or a student, and this will tell you everything you need to know about guest workers in postwar Germany. While the multiculturalism of many other European countries is largely due to postcolonial migration, much of the ethnic diversity in Germany is a result of the temporary ("guest") workers that came for opportunities during the rapid economic expansion that followed the war, then ultimately decided to stay in Germany instead of returning to their native countries. The author provides very strong analysis for how this all happened and how multiculturalism continues to impact Germany even decades later. Interesting read.
