Dreary collection of essays about a fascinating author

I ordered this book because I was preparing to lead a short seminar on "Tom Jones," and wanted more background on Fielding's life and times. Unfortunately, the essays in it were so tediously written that it was a struggle to get through them. In the end I found the critical and historical works at the back of the Norton Critical Edition of the novel far more useful in helping me think about the issues to address in discussions of Fielding's work.
I recommend Robert Alter's book "Fielding and the Nature of the Novel" (sadly, out of print) over this one if you want a good basic introduction to Fielding's work and why it matters. Alter's book is old (1968), but it's an incisive, well-written overview of the themes in Fielding's novels. The Cambridge Companion is up to date, but dull, dull, dull. It's like reading one of the more boring history textbooks you had in college. So sad that none of Fielding's humor or joie de vivre made it into this collection.

Since my dissertation was on Fielding, this didn't have a lot of new information in it, but I did enjoy reading and reviewing a lot of things I had not thought about for awhile.
