This book is an exposé of a secret American operation during World War II to seize 4,000 Germans from Latin America and intern them in camps in the Texas desert. Rather than Nazi spies and saboteurs, they turned out to be a broad range of German immigrants, even Jewish refugees, most of whom posed no danger to national security. Research in seven countries reveals the diplomatic intrigues and human impact of a misguided policy that offers important lessons about US relations with Latin America, the failure to rescue victims of the Holocaust, and the treatment of civilians in wartime.

Review
"...persuasively argued, lucidly written, and seasoned with black humor." American Historical Review
"Friedman...could not have produced a more timely and relevant book. Meticulously researched and well written..." German Studies Review
"A fascinating account...It is an excellently researched and superbly told story, one that relates with great care and nuance personal fates, diplomatic activities and economic warfare across three regions. The book represents international history at its best." H-GERMAN
"Friedman has set the bar very high for those who would follow him. [This] is an important addition to the study of this turbulent period and has set a new standard for research." Journal of American History
"In this time of war, there may be no better book to turn to than Friedman's engagingly written Nazis and Good Neighbors to reflect whether the government, or the mass media for that matter, ought to use the past of the "Good War" as precedent for today's "war on terrorism"...Friedman's work showcases the achievements of the new "'international history.'" Reviews in American History
"A stunning piece of historical sleuth work. This beautifully researched and compellingly argued account of the U.S. pursuit of German nationals in Latin America--written with the page-turning energy of a detective novel--opens a new window onto WWII-era policy of the U.S. toward its southern neighbors, and also illuminates the internal and international politics south of the border." Nancy Cott, Harvard University
"The research in U.S., Latin American, and German archives is extremely impressive. The story of bureaucratic overreach and bungling is grippingly told and compellingly argued." Daniel Rodgers, Princeton University

So little is heard about Germans caught! In the wide net cast by America at the start of WWII. This helps fill the gap.

Learning from the past
By Bruce Donald
Nazis and Good Neighbors is a meticulously researched account of U.S. involvement in Latin America during World War II. It lucidly explains the motivation of the United States in arranging and financing the imprisonment and deportation of thousands of Axis citizens who were legal residents in Central and South America.
Max Paul Friedman combines historical facts with an engaging style. The result is riveting reading. The impact this secret program had on Latin American governments and the people involved is clear. The parallel to U.S. policies toward "enemy aliens" today, is unmistakable.
