About the Author
Allen Wood is Ward W. and Pricilla B. Woods Professor at Stanford University. He was a John S. Guggenheim Fellow at the Free University in Berlin, and a national Endowment for the Humanities Fellow at the University of Bonn. He developed parts of this book in the 2005 Isaiah Berlin Lectures at Oxford University. Along with Paul Guyer, Professor Wood is co-editor of the Cambridge Edition of the Works of Immanuel Kant and translator of the Critique of Pure Reason. He is the author or editor of a number of other works, mainly on Kant, Hegel and Karl Marx.

Very rigorous and illuminating

In this book, Allen Wood provides an excellent, rigorous, illuminating account of Kant's ethics and, more broadly, Kantian ethics. This book is not light reading, especially the first eight chapters, but if you're willing to work through the book diligently, you will be rewarded greatly: you will gain a much deeper understanding of Kant's ethics from Wood, who has studied Kant for over 50 years.
In particular, you will learn about self-conceit and unsocial sociability, which play a fundamental role in Kant's ethics. In addition, you will see the relevance of Kantian ethics to recent or current political issues: the George W. Bush presidential administration ("a malignant alien occupation"), the Iraq War, torture, etc. Here, Wood does not mince words.
Lastly, in order to understand this book much better, I recommend reading the following texts beforehand:
1. Immanuel Kant's "Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals". Alternative translation. Read at least once.
2. Allen Wood's "Kant" (Blackwell)
3. Paul Guyer's "Kant" (Routledge). Read Part II.

Excellent for both beginners and advanced students of Kant's ethics

This is by far the best and most complete book I have read about Kant's ethics, but the author doesn't stop there, and actually develops an ethical theory that is sustainable even today. Interestingly, this theory is much closer to Kant's actual thought than most interpretations made to this day, so this book marks a new dawn of enlightened ethical thought amidst postmodern contemporary theories.
The book is farely easy to read (for a philosophy book), and only difficult when needed.
