'Hamlet' without Hamlet sets out to counter the modern tradition of abstracting the character Hamlet from the play. For over two centuries, Hamlet has been valued as the icon of consciousness: but only by ignoring the hard fact of his dispossession. By admitting that premise, this book brings the play to life around man's relation to land, from graves to estate to empire. Key preoccupations are thereby released, including the gendered imperatives of genealogy, and man's elemental affinity to dust. As de Grazia demonstrates from the 400 years of Hamlet's afterlife, such features have disappeared into the vortex of an interiorized Hamlet, but they remain in the language of the play as well as in the earliest accounts of its production. Once reactivated, a very different Hamlet emerges, one whose thoughts and desires are thickly embedded in the worldly, and otherworldly, matters of the play: a Hamlet within Hamlet.

Review
"De Grazia persuasively and with many supporting examples argues for the structural rather than psychological function of this pattern, which, by a concluding and somewhat surprising punch-line, she relates to then 'parousial structure,' the deferred judgement, as in Everyman and Paradise Lost. Such bold gestures are part of the 'sweeping claim' of this book, which, even taken with a pinch of critical salt, offers a great deal of perceptive and original insight and fresh observation to make it one of the most rewarding critical accounts of this over-interpreted play to have appeared for some time."
-Dieter Mehl
"Hamlet without Hamlet is a powerful, tremendously erudite, and often brilliantly inventive reckoning of what time has done to our ability to read, and to comprehend, Shakespeare's play."
- Linda Charnes, Shakespeare Quarterly
"This book offers a dazzling interpretation of the play that deftly reprises the history of Hamlet criticism...But do we really need another book on Shakespeare, let alone Hamlet? This luminous study pronounces a resounding affirmative."

A luminous new Hamlet
By Philip Dubois
This is a brilliant and persuasive contribution to the most written-about play in history. In a study which ranges over comparatively ignored aspects of 'Hamlet' - genealogy, inheritance, land, politics - De Grazia arrives at an authoritative new reading.
She shows how for the past 200 years many aspects of the play that were important to Shakespeare's contemporaries have been buried under the later obsession with interiority: the pensive, dilatory Hamlet of today's tradition. In this later critical evolution, a long procession of thinkers from Coleridge to Freud to Lacan have reinterpreted the play in an ongoing attempt to solve its (apparent)central question: why does Hamlet delay?
But de Grazia shifts the ground convincingly to more pragmatic and earthy concerns. She also shows that because the past two centuries of scholars have seen in 'Hamlet' a yawning question-mark, they have kept the play in the forefront of the modern by filling it with ever-new solutions based on Hamlet's inner conflict.
In 'Hamlet without Hamlet' professor De Grazia, while still honouring the power of these later interpretations, performs the miracle of recovering what they - and modern consciousness - have subsumed. Surely a landmark book.

Looking at the Evolution of "Hamlet" Over the Centuries
By dolgoruky
As the earlier review indicated, this is a wonderful approach to Shakespeare's play. By "Hamlet," of course, de Grazia means Shakespeare's play. By the unitalicized Hamlet, she means the character as he has evolved in criticism and performance over the last 200 years. Though there had been some concern about problems in the play during its first 200 years, around 1800, Goethe, Hegel, and Coleridge changed critical attitudes toward by shifting the emphasis to Hamlet's character. For example, there was not a concern about Hamlet's delay in killing Claudius until the turn of the 19th century, when shifts toward a more "romantic" (as in the romantic poets) view of character began to creep in. Eventually this concern became central to most interpretations. For example, Freud became fascinated with the play (he was a great Shakespeare fan, anyway), and Ernest Jones, his English biographer, claims that the famous "Oedipus complex" should really have been called the "Hamlet complex," since that's where it really all started with Freud's thinking about the matter.
Degrazia carefully differentiates the approaches to the play which have emerged in modern times from the way the original audiences would have looked at the issues. She freshly analyzes the text without prejudices while being fair to the evolution of approaches to the play.
