About the Author
D. Robert Ladd is Professor of Linguistics in the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences at the University of Edinburgh. He has published extensively on various aspects of intonation in the field's leading journals, including Language, Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, and Journal of Phonetics.

A clear, well-written introduction to intonational phonology

This is an extremely good, well-written, introduction to intonational phonology. It clearly presents the auto-segmental metrical theory of intonational phonology developed by Janet Pierrehumbert and others. Other introductory books on intonation (Cruttenden's Intonation and Couper-Kuhlen's An introduction to English Prosody) lack sufficient coverage of this important theory. The book also presents good summaries of intonational meaning and cross-language comparisons. A great, easy-to-read book. Definitely 5-stars

Every single letter is halftone gray!

I think linguists universally laud the content and style of the writing, and for that the book ought to get 5 stars. But the reproduction in the paperback form of this book is the worst I have ever seen. Every word is printed in halftone gray! Since the dot pitch is pretty large, the letters are fuzzy and hard to read, and it's hard for a nearsighted person like me not to focus on the white dots. And there is no respite from the eyestrain, as every single page of the book is printed this way. What a debacle!
